Best Cycling Routes on the Costa Blanca

Nestled in Spain’s Alicante province, Costa Blanca is a premier destination for cycling holidays both in summer and winter. With its sun-drenched microclimate, diverse terrain, and stunning coastal views, it’s no wonder professional cycling teams and enthusiasts flock here year-round for holidays and training camps.
If you’re looking to spend some time riding your bike and spotting professional cyclists in the Spanish winter sun, here’s a guide to our favourite cycling routes around Costa Blanca including Calpe and Altea.
Col de Rates
The Col de Rates is famed for its steady gradients and smooth switchbacks which are frequented by Grand Tour professionals. We’ll call in at the very popular cafe at the bottom of the col to have a quick coffee where it is not uncommon to see high profile riders including world and Olympic champions.
After reaching the scenic summit, the descent towards Tàrbena offers thrilling curves before looping back through Callosa and the charming village of Polop, with plenty of café stop options along the way.
This is one of the most popular climbs in the area and one not to be missed!

Sierra Mariola
Explore the serene Sierra Mariola Park, dotted with forests and dramatic rock formations. Pass through historic towns like Bocairent and Muro de Alcoy, and enjoy the gentle rolling gradients ideal for a moderately challenging ride. This route offers sweeping views across the Albaida Valley, making it a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural charm.
Castel de Guadalest
One of the most picturesque cycling routes in Alicante. This ride takes you inland to the stunning hilltop village of Castell de Guadalest. The climb is steady and scenic, surrounded by dramatic rock formations and citrus groves. Don’t miss the panoramic viewpoint at the top – it’s one of the most Instagrammable spots on the cycling routes we ride on the Costa Blanca
Xorret de Catí & Guixop
For those seeking steep ascents, this route features the formidable Xorret de Catí, known for its 24% gradients and appearances in the Vuelta a España. The nearby Guixop climb, or Balcón de Alicante, offers relentless gradients and stunning coastal vistas.
Val d’Ebo
A full-day ride for seasoned riders, this challenging route includes long climbs, technical descents, and awe-inspiring views of inland Costa Blanca. The Val d’Ebo climb itself is a local favourite – quiet, well-paved, and offering a peaceful escape into the mountains. Ideal for those training for Gran Fondos or multi-day cycling tours.

Puerto de Bernia
Climbing from the coast, the road winds through quiet mountain terrain with sweeping views of the Mediterranean and distant peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass dramatic cliffs and historic sites like the 16th-century Fort de Bernia. The descent offers thrilling curves and panoramic valley views. With 1,585 metres of climbing over 67 miles, it’s a true Costa Blanca cycling classic.
Benissa and Xabia (Javea)
The 55-mile route following smooth roads that hug the Mediterranean shoreline. Pass through Calpe with its iconic rock, then wind inland to Benissa before reaching the picturesque bay of Xàbia. Ideal for a coffee ride as it passes through areas rumoured to be home to the most high profile professional cyclists.
Planning Your Costa Blanca Cycling Holiday
If you’re looking to combine a beach holiday with riding your bike, the best times to visit the Costa Blanca are Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November). These months offer optimal cycling conditions and blooming landscapes and the weather is plenty warm enough to sit out well into the evening outside your favourite restaurant.
But if you are looking to rub shoulders with world famous cyclists then consider December, January and February. These are the months when high profile Grand Tour teams descend on the Costa Blanca for winter training camps. You will regularly see riders such as Tom Pidcock, Woue van Aert and many, many more out on your daily rides.
Calpe, Altea, and Benidorm are popular bases, providing easy access to various routes and cycling-friendly amenities but we use the amazing Hotel Cap Negret in Altea. It’s home to many Grand Tour teams including Bahrain Victorious who have made this fantastic video of the hotel and its facilities.
